The images of starvation and desperation, the calls for aid and the millions of livelihoods lost and displaced, from the Horn of Africa can repeat itself anywhere. Around the world some 50 million people may be displaced within the next 10 years as a result of desertification. “We can continue implementing inappropriate policies at our own peril,” says Marton LeFevre, Director General of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature,“but it does not have to be this way."
